Pretty average

Rating: 6/10

When I went to the theater I was deciding between this and the new Die
Hard movie, I wish I saw Die Hard.

From the previews this movie looked like it would be at least mildly
amusing, and it was, VERY mildly amusing in a FEW parts. Other than
that it just wasn't funny or amusing or entertaining. All of the humor
just felt very forced, if you see this movie you will know what I mean.
Although I must say the part where one of the aliens explains that
aliens built all the earth technology, not humans, was pretty good in
my opinion.

I did like the two earth dudes and from the previews I thought they
would play a big part in this movie but they were in it for maybe all
of about five minutes, we don't even get their names. It may have been
funnier if they were in it more.

Overall this is a pretty average computer-animated family movie that is
barely funny and mildly entertaining. There is not a whole lot going on
that will really grab your attention, so because of that, I found
myself just sitting in the theater impatiently waiting for it to be
over.

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family. But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo's empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and …

Perfect Date Night Flick for Adults

Rating:

I was expecting this movie to be just another chick-flick romance, but
since this film adds thrill and mystery to a typically cheesy genre, I
find myself enjoying it a lot more.

It is directed by Lasse Hallstrom, who also directed "What's Eating
Gilbert Grape" which is one of my favorite movies. I really enjoy
Lasse's style when it comes to scenery and direction, so I find the
cinematography in this film to be very beautiful and picturesque. I
also enjoy the soundtrack to this movie because it has the perfect
balance of sappy romantic melodies, as well as suspenseful pieces to
fit the mood of each scene.

The one thing that really bothers me about this movie is the end. There
is a pretty substantial plot twist in the middle of the movie, but then
another one is thrown in at the very last scene. It is completely
unnecessary and takes the film from being relatively realistic, to
being totally unrealistic. I hate to say this, but it's just dumb.

My favorite character is Tierney (David Lyons.) He is a detective who
plays a major part in the plot, and he has by far the most convincing
performance. Every time he comes on the screen, I get this creepy
feeling that he isn't exactly what he seems. The main thing I look for
when it comes to acting is whether or not the actors are able to make
the audience feel something, and David definitely succeeds.

I recommend Safe Haven for audiences ages 13 and up, due to mature
content, such as violence and abuse. Ages 13-18 will get the most
enjoyment out of it, but it would also be a perfect date night flick
for adults. I give this film 4 out of 5 stars, so go check out Safe
Haven! Raven Devanney, age 15, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.

I saw this at the Hamptons International Film Festival as the Spotlight
film and it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is so
relatable, even if you don't suffer from the same afflictions as the
main characters, and its implications are so far-reaching that
everyone, I believe, can learn a little something from Pat and Tiffany.
The story sends such wonderful messages about finding the "silver
lining" and is uplifting, even in the seemingly most dire
circumstances. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper are phenomenal, and
I found myself really attached to their characters. This is a must see
for everyone! And I will be seeing it again when it hits theaters in
November.

Much much better than I expected

Rating: 7/10

I have never been much of a fan of The Rock. My love of professional
wrestling tapered off around the time I was about 15 years old, and
that was before The Rock's heydey. His movies (the ones I have seen)
have been marginal at best in my opinion. But for a guy who was ushered
into the field of acting to capitalize on his popularity and not to win
Academy Awards, he has come a long way from The Scorpion King. What I
liked about "Snitch" is it's the anti-action movie. I expected a movie
like the terrible "Last Stand" starring Ah-nold Schwarzenegger. I
expected fabricated car chases and shootouts where the bad guys must be
shooting blanks because they are unable to shoot the good guy even when
they have a clear shot. I expected scenes where The Rock would beat up
10 guys who all take turns coming at him instead of simply jumping him.
But "Snitch" was different. It's a story of the lengths a father will
go to help his son. I don't want to give away any spoilers but he goes
very far. The Rock — he's credited as Dwayne Johnson (I guess so
viewers take the movie seriously) — is very believable and does
himself proud with some consistent good acting. He shows the
trepidation and vulnerability of a father who puts his life on the line
to save his son, who is imprisoned after committing a dumb crime. But
the actor who steals the movie is John Bernthal, who plays an ex-con
trying to live an honest life but is dragged back to the dark side in
order to help The Rock, whom he works for doing construction. Michael
Kenneth Williams will forever be known as "Omar" and is typecast but
does a good turn as a drug dealer. The other supporting cast, including
Susan Sarandon as a district attorney, are excellent. "Snitch" moves at
a deliberate pace, which gives it more of a natural and believable
feel. The few action sequences are good and do not seem overly
exaggerated. I will go out on a limb and say this movie will not be
nominated for Best Picture, but compared with the junk I've seen so far
this year (including the latest Die Hard), I recommend "Snitch".

Do not listen to others who may say that this movie was garbage or not
good. I went to this movie with a few of my friends and the theater was
packed. Melissa Was hysterical the whole entire movie and pardon my
french she had me laughing my ass off to the point of embarrassment.

The movie had a really good story-line, one that was original and new.
Throughout the movie they added more and more characters so your mind
didn't become bored of the whole entire situation and in the end it was
a pleasing and satisfactory finish one that didn't leave you mad, sad,
but happy and maybe even with a giggle.

Please go see this movie i gave it 9/10 it was extremely funny don't
listen to the critics these days they don't judge a movie by its
awesomeness. That's my Job!

After my friend made me watch Red Riding Hood. I was almost convinced
that fairytale adaptations could never be great. I was wrong. Jack and
the beanstalk was a suitable fairytale to be adapted on the big screen.
It had giants, heights, and monstrous plants. The whole theater was
laughing nonstop, and below are the reasons why. 1. The parallels
between Jack and Isabel (the most clichéd name for a girl, btw.
Remember Twilight?) when they were young children and then grown-ups.it
showed that people who come from different backgrounds can be similar,
and that they didn't just end up together because they went through
some adventures, they were fated from the beginning. 2. I like the
tie-in from every random scene. Etc when Jack was giving a pompous
speech and everyone kneeled down and he said, "there's someone behind
me, right?", it wasn't just some random thing, but it was repeated
later to show how Jack had grown from a commoner to a prince. 3. The
action! The movie isn't afraid to be gory and scary, what with human
torture, murder, the last stand, and giants. 4. They purposely made the
bad guys ugly and stupid, easy to hate. Especially the sidekick who
died such an ironic death. 5. I like how Jack was portrayed as a brave
and smart guy. He didn't just trade a horse for 5 beans–he was
supposed to exchange the beans for 10 copper coins! He figured out how
to kill giant in an ingenious way. Also he is nice to everyone, and
handsome to boot. 6. And I love how the movie ends up being related to
the modern world, shows how smart is film is. It doesn't need to be in
a "fantasy" because it makes sense and is realistic! Just don't go in
with low expectations, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas Strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt's growing ego. But lately the duo's greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they've grown to loathe each other. Facing cutthroat competition from guerrilla street magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show is starting to look stale. But there's still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act-both onstage and off-if only Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.

The Combination of Magic and Comedy Work Wonders

Rating: 7/10

Burt Wonderstone may be more pleasant than it really deserves credit
for. Maybe it's because the past two months have been such a wasteland
for films, or maybe it's because I am somewhat easily amused. None the
less, this is a pleasant film. It didn't blow me away or leave me
crying from laughing so hard, but the combination of the comedic chops
of the delightful cast and the entertaining magic tricks left me
smiling when I left the theater. In a time when there is little in the
theater to get excited about, this is a film I quite enjoyed.

Steve Carell plays magician Burt Wonderstone, the boastful,
self-indulgent, and obnoxiously asinine half to Steve Buscemi, who are
partners, and best friends since childhood, in the magic business in
Vegas. However, both Burt's obnoxiousness and a new street magician,
played by Jim Carrey, soon get in the way of his success, and he's
forced to re-examine what his career means to him.

While the magic might be a mystery here, the plot isn't, and it's a
plot that goes through all the motions and hits all the points. But if
you're someone who doesn't mind that, you will find yourself enjoying
this film for it's bright points. Steve Carell is both pompous and
lovable here, an idiot savant so to speak, but as a magician lampooning
well known, silly performing magicians in Vegas, he's hilarious. Jim
Carrey is the second part of the equation, at his best since years. Jim
hasn't been this funny in a long time and steals the show every time
he's on screen. Rounding out the cast are an underused Steve Buscemi,
who disappears for a good chunk of the film, Olivia Wilde who seems
like a bit of a mismatch for the goofy Carell, and James Gandolfini as
James Gandolfini running a casino. There's also a wonderful appearance
by Alan Arkin as an aging and inspirational magician.

There's a lot here that works, and a lot that doesn't. All of the
mockery towards magicians of all kinds are spot on. Carell and Buscemi
are perfect as send ups of well known magicians like David Copperfield
and Jim Carrey is likewise as a caricature of "street magicians" like
Criss Angel. And there's just enough Jim that he's hilarious, but not
obnoxiously overused. Olivia Wilde gets her own spotlight to shine and
she's as pleasant as ever here. And the combination of magic and comedy
are a great and somewhat refreshing mix. I'll also add that just about
everything with Alan Arkin is hilarious.

However, the film is pretty formulaic and there's a lot that feels
forced. The love story, for one, feels generic and plastic. It's hard
to believe that, after everything Olivia Wilde's character goes through
with Carell's character, she falls for him (though there is a
particular scene between the two that is pretty hilarious). Most of the
plot points also feel very by the numbers. Most of the comedy comes
from gags and one-offs.

But, in the end, it all adds up to a fun and entertaining time. If
you're going expecting something amazing, you'll probably be
disappointed, but if you're going expecting to have a fun time, then I
think you will find yourself pleased.

Rating: 9/10

This was a good thriller and it sucks you in right from the start.
There is no down time and at no point does the movie get slow as many
thrillers do. One thing is for sure, You wont be able to take a potty
break!

Of course the movie does have some weak points but what movies don't?
My main grip would be the ending, it seemed kind of lazy, but I think
they wanted to make it somewhat realistic… maybe? This movie is not
going to win any awards or anything like that, but it is fun to watch.
So, if you enjoy thrillers, you won't be disappointed with this one!
So, go ahead and check it out, don't be over critical, just enjoy it
for what it is, a fun, on the edge of your seat thriller that will get
and keep you engaged from the first minute.

Has its moments but outside of Sam Raimi's strong directorial efforts and Rachel Weisz's fun and wickedly sassy performance, the movie plays more like a Star Wars prequel.

Rating: 5/10

Mildly entertaining look at the origins of the characters from 'The
Wizard of Oz" has everything down pack. From great visuals to
imaginative set pieces, this film has everything. Its does not have
however a single interesting character outside of the film's main
villain and her good witch sister. Not to mention the fact that its
script is as thin as a sheet of paper and the plot reeks of a Star Wars
prequel but with out the light sabers. Its main hero Oscar Diggs
(Played by James Franco) is not interesting at all and it does not help
matters that Franco is miscast and while Oscar is supposed to be a bit
of a conman with a heart; Franco comes across more as a degenerate
deviant with his performance. While Franco is sputtering out of control
performances wise, it falls on his co-stars to pick up his slack and
one of them is Rachel Weisz, who plays the oldest witch sister Evanora,
who rules Oz with a velvet iron glove. She is manipulative and cunning
and in my mind the best thing about this film. While most of the things
in this film are mostly kids stuff, Weisz infuses her character with a
wickedly sassy seductive charm that elevates this film past most of its
problems. Her showmanship with the material is greatly appreciated,
especially when after a while; you are getting quite annoyed with most
of the characters in this movie, especially the computer generated
ones. Another actor who picks up Franco's slack is Michelle Williams,
who is very charming in a good girl kind of way and is the only actor
in the film who can hold the screen with Weisz performance wise. The
movie could have worked much better if it just had Weisz and Williams
as the leads but unfortunately, its not and we have to suffer though
Franco trying to be charming in a squirmy kind of way and suffer though
probably the movie's worse offense, which is the character of Theodora
played by Mila Kunis, who redefines the word "Miscast". Theodora is
supposed to be innocent in this film and gradually lose her innocence
to become (Spoiler) the iconic "Wicked Witch of the West".
Unfortunately, Mila comes across as interesting as a block of wood in
this film and her transformation towards the climax ends up being more
funny in a very bad sort of way than revealing. It does not help
matters that Mila looks as disinterested in her character as the
audience is and a better actor with more range could have brought more
to it.

All and all, it had its moments but its problems weight it down.

When they arrive, they notice that while there are plenty of children present, the adults all seem to be missing. Initially attributing this to the after effects of a recent festival, they quickly realize something far more sinister is afoot. The two will face terror and unsettling difficult decisions in their quest to make it off the island alive.

Rating: 6/10

Come Out and Play is basically a carbon copy of the original 1976 film
Who Can Kill A Child? It was a lazy remake that didn't even try to
attempt something different with the concept or reinterpret it. The
film is a retread and a missed opportunity to breath new life into the
killer kids subgenre. The film still manages to capture the unsettling
dread, suspense, mysterious and creepy atmosphere and terrifying
helplessness that made the original effective. The musical score was
intense and heart pounding and made you feel like you were watching a
living nightmare captured on celluloid. The elements that made it watch
able is that the premise is still creepy and disturbing and the story
is still effective and shocking. Come Out and Play is in the end though
just another pointless remake with nothing remotely new to show or say.

The performances were solid for the most part but I thought the script
was pretty weak with underdeveloped characters. The two leads were
likable and did their best with little that they were given, but they
just played the typical, token stranded tourists that waited too long
to get the hell out of there. Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Vinessa Shaw play
parents to be Francis and Beth, who take one last vacation before Beth
is due to give birth to their child. They make a trip to a secluded
island and realize too late that all of the adults are missing and the
children left behind. The doomed couple soon discovers that the
children are homicidal maniacs, with no explanation of how they got
that way. We as viewers are just as baffled as the couple and there
wasn't even a hint to how the children got that way. I think the main
stars are talented performers, but are wasted here as the lackluster
script raises more questions than answers.

Director, Makinov pretty much cut and paste here with no inspiration
behind the proceeding. He knows the basics of a horror movie but
weren't inventive with the elements; as a result there wasn't any
moments of surprise because if you've seen the original you know the
outcome. The director brought nothing new to the story.

Overall, it's an uninspired remake that's too faithful to the original
and you might as well just rent the original because it's exactly the
same right down to the ending. Both give effective chills, but there is
no good reason for this remake to exist. Still there are far worse out
there.

Minnie Stardust

Rating: 6/10

I usually despise musicals. I cringe at the sight of teenagers wearing
pasted-on smiles, belting out show tunes whilst mid-conversation with
stern authority figures. Yet Marc Evans' Hunky Dory seeks to counter
the contrivance of High School Musical and Glee, instead presenting us
with a naturalistic drama that explores the lives of a dreamless bunch
of kids in pre-Thatcher South Wales. Despite facing their last summer
holiday before being destined for mediocrity, free-spirited drama
teacher Vivienne May (Minnie Driver) wants her class to put on an end
of year production of The Tempest "that William Shakespeare and David
Bowie would be proud of" in order to give them some lasting hope of
achievement.

The film follows the cast as they seek to produce a "Shakespearean
concept rock opera", despite disapproval from conservative teachers,
prejudiced rugby coaches and skinhead relatives. The youngsters'
talents shine through, with the 1976 backdrop meaning ensemble
performances of the likes of David Bowie, Nick Drake, ELO and The Beach
Boys. There is a strong feel-good vibe to Hunky Dory, which dances
between comedic musical and nostalgic drama with some success. Several
character arcs map the cast's progression through the stereotypical
hurdles of adolescent strife – but all's well by opening night, when
the class perform relatively unscathed.

However, there is a great failing in Hunky Dory due to its poverty of
originality. The setting and story borrow heavily from Richard
Linklater's Dazed and Confused and School of Rock, whilst the students'
individual stories aren't given time to develop, and so seem to be
pulled straight from Skins and Cemetery Junction. Perhaps Marc Evans
bit off more than he could chew here. I imagine that Hunky Dory would
play out quite well as a TV mini-series, and perhaps the predictable
plot and two-dimensional characters may simply be a result of it being
confined to 110 minutes. Nonetheless, the film is an easy watch,
especially the final rendition of Life On Mars?, which is performed
impeccably. Expect some warm chuckles in the hazy Welsh sunshine, but
not riotous laughs. Hunky Dory won't ever have you on the edge of your
seat, but its pleasant enough to keep you in it.

This was a real highlight at Sundance, an incredible movie, has all the
grittiness a street film should have, but with real heart. The story is
familiar, but Sally El Hosaini's script keeps it fresh by introducing
unexpected twists that keep you wanting to find out what's coming next.
Without giving any of those twists away, this is basically a film about
two brothers and how their relationship changes as the younger one who
has always looked up to the elder grows disenchanted with him, while
trying to define himself as a man (which he isn't quite yet). Setting
that story in the midst of London gang life pushes the poignancy of the
story with great effect. Beautiful cinematography by David Raedeker and
the outstanding acting of James Floyd and Fady Elsayed make this a real
treat.

A deeply moving film about how 38 Jews survived the Holocaust in underground caves in Ukraine for over 500 days

Rating: 9/10

As John Anderson of "Variety" rightly notes, "this film defies the
notion that the era has been exhausted of its stories, or the ways they
can be told…" (http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117948276/). The
interchange between graphic re-enactment, interviews of the survivors
still with us today, and narrative of caver Chris Nicola, elevate this
story from one about mere survival to one about the strength of the
human spirit and the value of life.

Producers Janet Tobias, Rafael Marmor, Paul Laikin, Nadav Schirman,
Susan Barnett, and Zita Kisgergely do more than depict a story. Like
the family of 38 Jews escaping Nazi death camps and ghettos, we are led
by the courageous matriarch of the family, Esther Stermer, into the
deep underground of Ukraine.

In defiance of the myths of science-fiction/horrors about the
underworld, the matriarch teaches us the truth about the worlds above
and below ground in 1940s Europe; the real daemons are to be found up
there, while the crutch of life and human spirit is found down below.
And when the horror from above tries to come down below, it is
confronted with the most powerful living spirit of them all – the
spirit of a mother determined to protect her family.

The cinematography complements the telling of this story wonderfully.
In the darkness of the caves, dimly lit candles bring hope;
black-and-white historical videos and the grey tones from a clouded
over sky infuse reality into the setting of the horror-world of the
above; and the brightness and beauty of the spring blossom in the heart
of the war provide a poetic irony that foretells of a coming
heartbreak.

The detail of the costume design – from broken buttons and worn
shoe-laces to the mud and dirt covered white shirts of the eldest
Stermer sons to the impenetrable headscarf of the matriarch – add more
than mere richness, but a believability that matches the real-life
outfits worn by the cavers.

Finally, the devil is truly in the detail of the hair and head-to-toe
make-up, which give off the festering scent of rot, mud and soak, and
serve as a constant reminder that this is a story of real people trying
to survive a world in which hell had no barriers, and deserved no place
on earth.

With Love and Honour, Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer bring some
Aussie flavour to the quintessential American staple: a love story set
in wartime.

The film tells the tale of Mickey (Hemsworth) and Dalton (Austin
Stowell), two soldiers who spend their week off from Vietnam flying
back to America, where Dalton plans to reunite with his best gal Jane
(Aimee Teegarden). Mickey, ever the adventurer, tags along for the ride
before getting bitten by the love bug himself in the form of Candace
(Palmer).

If the plot sounds older than time itself, it's because it is, but the
film remains at least a bearably enjoyable romp. In what proves to be
both a blessing and a curse, Love and Honour plays out like two films
in one.

In the first half, the acting on display is above par, and while the
script fails to account for some plot holes, it manages to avoid an
avalanche of clichés that films of this genre are typically so prone
to.

Disappointingly, the second half labours, jumping right back onto the
beaten track en route to a bland and entirely expected conclusion. A
decent option as a mind-numbing stimulus, watching this ninety-three
minute film will feel like…well, about an hour-and-a-half.

*There's nothing I love more than a bit of feedback, good or bad. So
drop me a line on jnatsis@iprimus.com.au and let me know what you
thought of my review. If you're looking for a writer for your movie
website or other publication, I'd also love to hear from you.*

A Very Foreign Film… Set in New York!

Rating: 8/10

When most people think of foreign film, they think of films in a
language they don't understand, locations they've never been to, actors
they've never heard of, and stories unique to a specific culture. We
often fail to acknowledge that there are places and cultures within our
own borders that can be just as foreign to us as any Asian or European
community.

"Gimme the Loot," which is playing at the San Francisco International
Film Festival, is just such a film. Set in New York City's Borough of
the Bronx (talk about a foreign land!) the film tells the story of
Malcolm and Sofia, a "tagging team" that set their sights on the
greatest "bombing" target in the history of New York graffiti. All they
need is $500 to get access to the sight. And so the adventure begins…

And that is just what this film really is – an urban adventure story.
The story of two young people who set out on a trek and what happens to
them along the way. If you're put off by the setting, or the language
(which seems to have been scripted by David Mamet in the opening
scene,) or the "Maguffin" of the graffiti bomb, please don't be. All
those things are ancillary in this tale of the challenges in navigating
the foreign land of inner city New York and what happens along the way.
It's a funny, harsh, sweet, heartbreaking and oddly (though not
unexpectedly) optimistic movie. For all the wrongdoing the couple
perpetrate in their attempt to achieve their goal, you end up really
liking the characters and kind of wishing they succeed.

The two lead actors, Ty Hickson and Tashiana Washington, are terrific
in their roles. While their inexperience shows through at times, for
the most part they ARE Malcolm and Sophia. The director, Adam Leon,
assured the Festival audience that they are both nothing like their
characters ("Ty actually wears bow ties all the time.")

Leon also had the advantage of having a former NYC tour guide work as
his location scout, so the film transports you into parts of New York
that you'd never get to see get to see on your standard city excursion.
Shot on location over 21 days, every setting seems just right for this
story.

Special note should also be given to the soundtrack, which is
absolutely what you would NOT expect for a story with characters of
their age and environment. One would expect a plethora of hip hop or
rap pulsing throughout the film, but be prepared for something just a
little different.

This is writer/director Leon's first feature and he's manages to
deliver a film that, while small in budget, is big in heart. Well worth
seeking out…

Heartwarming gem of a film.

Rating: 9/10

David Wozniack has quite the problem. As a man who doesn't have many
responsibilities aside from driving his dad's delivery truck for the
butcher shop, he's the father of 533 children. He's got commitment
issues with his girlfriend, and gets ragged on for not being dependable
enough. So how did this happen?

All the children were conceived thanks to his donations to the
fertility clinic, registered under 'Starbuck' – and it's twenty years
later – 142 of the kids want to know his identity. Class action lawsuit
time!

I heard about this premise from a friend, and it sounded absolutely
hilarious. What would anyone even do in this situation? It's absurd! I
went in, expecting plenty of laughs, but walked out with a genuine love
for this film. It's a wonderful surprise. What could have been a mere
gimmick for comedy turned out to be a starting point for something much
more. When we first see David, he isn't doing well. Nothing is expected
of him, he seems to be a disappointment with everyone he knows, except
for his best friend, and the news of this children can only be a
headache. However, he decides to take a more active approach and gets
to know his children, as scary as the idea seems. One step at a time,
one child at a time. The result is an effective mix of silly and sweet,
some great lines, and genuine emotion.

I don't think this film will get a wide a distribution as it deserves,
which is a real shame. I suspect the fact that it being in French will
deter some audience members from the film. Personally, I saw it with
subs and it wasn't hard to follow. It's well worth the effort to do a
bit of reading. Starbuck has piqued my interest to see more Canadian
films in hopes of more gems like this one. All I can do is spread the
word, and hopefully the word of mouth will help it along. This film is
a crowd-pleaser and I was caught between laughing and crying during
some parts, I can't praise it enough. Give it a chance if it happens to
be playing your local theatre – it might just blow you away!

A very refreshing film. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing it again in
theatres.

1968 was the year that changed the world. And for four young Aboriginal sisters from a remote mission this is the year that would change their lives forever. Around the globe, there was protest and revolution in the streets. Indigenous Australians finally secured the right to vote. There were drugs and the shock of a brutal assassination. And there was Vietnam. The sisters, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave, a talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. Billed as Australia's answer to 'The Supremes', Dave secures the sisters their first true gig, and flies them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops. Based on a true story, THE SAPPHIRES is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music.

As a lover of Australian film who was lucky enough to be at the Cannes
premiere, I was filled with pride at the accomplishments of The
Sapphires. Not only does the film tackle a huge story- it does so with
heart, humor and a stellar soundtrack. It's exciting to see an
Australian film diverge from suburban monotony and celebrate our
countries vibrant culture and history. Deborah Mailman made me cry,
Chris O'Dowd made me laugh and the superb Jessica Mauboy had me singing
in my seat.

The Sapphires is a timely dose of optimism that had me falling in love
with soul music all over again.

I admit I liked Admission.

Rating:

The amusing Admission is the first successful comedy of the year and a
reasonable look at the admission process for an elite
college–Princeton. Tina Fey as Portia and Paul Rudd as John turn in
pleasant performances as an admissions executive and a progressive
school teacher respectively. Rudd is amiable here and usually
successful in his film career, while Fey's efforts up to now have been
mediocre (Date Night, Baby Mama).

As an Alumni Admissions interviewer for over 30 years at Georgetown
University, I find much of the story ringing true from the
overachieving candidates nurtured by ambitious parents to the
underachieving but brilliant and risky individualists. Portia must
struggle with the boxed-in role of continuing the Princeton tradition
(read stereotypes) or breaking away to push for a student who calls
himself an "autodidact" with low grades but perfect scores on
achievement tests for courses he never took.

Amid the plot's fierce applicant battle for a slot, Portia and John
dance to the usual romantic formula of disliking each other to . . .
Well, you know the drill. However, it's their reactions to the
admission process that provide the authentic tension as he has
developed students with independent minds, and she is used to the
cookie-cutter candidates who lack the passion of those independents.

Director Paul Weitz knows something about family dynamics and children
with his About a Boy, In Good Company, and Little Fockers among the
more obvious examples. Signing up Lily Tomlin to play Portia's feminist
mom was inspired; like the ubiquitous aging Alan Arkin, Tomlin should
now have plenty of work.

Admission requires no small amount of sympathy for the messy business
of growing up and getting ahead—Weitz navigates the vagaries of family
ambition well. If the double-meaning of the title seems too precious to
you, don't worry, the rest of the story is almost unambiguous.

Although Admission is mostly about applicants to an upper-tier college,
it also poses the unethical means some might employ to gain entrance.
Even Portia is not blameless, a touch I found in the film's favor while
it deals with the unreal segment of our population smart enough to be
considered for admission.

Excellent movie for the whole family to enjoy!

Rating: 10/10

I saw this movie at a sneak preview this afternoon. This was a very
enjoyable movie for our whole family. Me and my husband sat there and
laughed frequently, being completely enthralled with the story and
graphics. Meanwhile, my daughter and my 7 year-old grandson sat with
us, and they also were laughing throughout most of the movie. It has
something for people of all ages to enjoy. It was heartwarming, and at
times, it totally pulls on your heartstrings, too. The characters were
appealing, and the type you find yourself rooting for as time goes by,
and the animals that interact with the humans frequently stole the
show! I know that some critics will have issues with some of the
fantastic creatures that are seen, and they may take issue with the
extraordinary things that The Croods are able to do physically. I knew
going into this movie that this movie was a work of fiction, though,
and therefore I was able to suspend my expectations of reality, and go
on the ride that Dreamworks wanted to take me on. I thoroughly enjoyed
myself, and took this movie for what it was – a lighthearted comedy
about a family going through changes, and how they deal with those
changes. I would definitely recommend this as a great movie to see!!

Rating: 9/10

Mike Banning(Gerard Butler) kicks butt and takes names in this film! It
is like Die Hard in the White House. It actually would be Die Hard
except there are better fighting scenes and a secret service agent
taking on terrorists is a much more plausible story line than a New
York cop going all Rambo. The plot is easy to understand, which is just
what you want for a big action flick. That way there is no need to over
think things – just sit back and watch some awesome explosions and
sweet fights!

There are a few emotional situations that are a bit underdeveloped, but
that is expected. After all, its a rated R action movie not a PG13
Nicholas Sparks one! The 2 hour run time was almost entirely focused on
the action which is exactly what you want to pay for when you see a
movie like this.

It's R rating comes almost solely from violence, there is little
swearing and no sexuality.

You want my advice? See it! And do so in the big screen.

Just TERRIBLE. Unnecessary sequel, pitiful writing and poor execution.

Rating: 3/10

The Last Exorcism Part II is simply put a terrible movie. I absolutely
loved the first film but Part II is like the Blair Witch Project 2 of
the original Blair Witch Project. Its unnecessary, it doesn't
accomplish anything and it doesn't push the story forward. All this
film was made for was to show you how Nell tries to recover after the
events of the first film. THATS IT! The scares are few and far between
the story is just downright dumb from the beginning and you never
really feel for any of the characters from the get go. I wouldn't
recommend seeing this film even for the fans of the first one. Besides
a daring opening sequence, a few moments of suspense and interesting
character moments this movie is a complete fluke. The Last Exorcism
accomplished a sense of true horror and dread. You actually felt for
the characters. Part II I see more of as a Dark Comedy. You can't even
take this movie seriously at times. It seems the only reason this
sequel was made was because the first film made 100 million at the box
office. Thats it!

3 out of 10 stars. This movie was just bad. Simple as that!

or too silly to offer any glimpse of realism or consequence. "Dead Man
Down" offers just the right amount of grittiness to be taken seriously,
but also maintains its own identity with a heavy focus on character
development and a more philosophical viewpoint on the nature of getting
even. The vengeful gangster and his plight may be a repetitive
backstory, but the cryptic structuring, attention to emotion, and
competent acting strengthens the refreshingly fluctuating twists. While
the conclusion digresses into a prosaic, albeit satisfying action
sequence, it doesn't dilute the antiheros' uniquely warped relationship
or their infectiously harsh personalities.

When crime lord Alphonse's (Terence Howard) men begin turning up
murdered, along with enigmatic clues elaborating on the responsible
party, the gangster looks to his henchmen Victor (Colin Farrell) and
Darcy (Dominic Cooper) for answers. But Victor has his own plans,
including a labored revenge scheme against those that wronged him in
the past. As he steadily brings his complex machinations to fruition,
he starts an unlikely relationship with his neighbor, Beatrice (Noomi
Rapace), an emotionally damaged woman with desires just as ominous as
his. Forced into a vicious cycle of vengeance, Victor must attempt to
not only satisfy his demons but also salvage the soul of his newfound
companion.

Adorned with an impossibly generic title, "Dead Man Down" is
unexpectedly an absorbingly unique revenge fantasy. Devoid of the
typical action, adventure, and beauteous damsels-in-distress, it is
instead a morbidly dark, fascinatingly grim look at revenge and, less
commonly, the aftermath. The emotions experienced by the hateful, the
murderous, and the defensive are scrutinized beyond the normal array of
purely evil entities undergoing deserved comeuppance. Nothing is black
and white in the film – instead, every character is tinged with
complications and questionable qualities, making this group of
antiheroes unpredictable, sympathetic, or repugnant in alternating
turns.

It's rare to see a crime thriller spend so much time on character
development. It's also quite welcome – the ulterior motives, extortive
attitudes, and sabotage aren't awkwardly spontaneous but rather
sensible operations for generously analyzed mentalities. These aren't
cardboard cutouts; and excessive dialogue doesn't make up for lack of
substance. Instead, director Niels Arden Oplev opts for prolonged,
brooding facial communications that convey much more than stale words.
It's a feat for Farrell to be so convincing as an implacable gangster
(his best role since "In Bruges") and Rapace is sensational as an
equally bitter survivor who literally wears the scars of mental anguish
on her face. Howard is one of the few weak spots, once again taking a
sinister role and making it apprehensive. And although the climax
embodies the raging, explosive visualization of suspenseful retribution
that audiences crave (a contrasting culmination for the sake of
crowd-pleasing action), it's the contrived satisfaction "Dead Man Down"
needs to soften the blow of such a severe, serious series of
retaliations.
