'Croods,' 'Olympus' Excel, 'Admission' Fails on Friday (24 Mar 2013)

The Croods and Olympus Has Fallen both opened north of $10 million on Friday, while Spring Breakers did solid business in its nationwide expansion. The only loser this weekend looks to be Admission, which couldn't even crack the Top Five despite the presence of Tina Fey and Paul Rudd.DreamWorks Animation's The Croods took first place with an estimated $11.6 million from 4,046 locations on opening day. That's a bit better than Rio ($10.34 million), but slightly below How to Train Your Dragon ($12.1 million). For the three-day weekend, it's likely that The Croods winds up above $40 million, which is a good start ahead of the Easter/Passover holidays. In second place, Olympus Has Fallen debuted to an estimated $10.4 million from 3,098 locations (its per-theater average was actually better than The Croods). That's a very strong start for the first of two White House invasion movies this year (the second, White House Down, opens in June »

Tilda Swinton to Occasionally Sleep in a Glass Box at MoMA (24 Mar 2013)

Pretty much everything Tilda Swinton does is great, so when she showed up to sleep alongside a jug of water on a mattress in a glass box at MoMA on Friday, she immediately became the greatest thing in sleeping art since Andy Warhol's never-ending Sleep film. "Museum staff doesn't know she's coming until the day of, but she's here today," a museum source told Gothamist (who took some fun photos.) The performance, titled "The Maybe," will remain "unannounced" and "random" and will last for a full day when it happens. Swinton (who's done this before in London and Rome) hasn't said anything about the piece, and MoMA's official comments only confirmed that there would be "no published schedule for its appearance, no artist's statement released, no museum statement beyond this brief context, no public profile or image issued. Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and »

If Ryan Reynolds is out who should play Green Lantern in 'Justice League'? (24 Mar 2013)

Two years ago, "Green Lantern" was expected to be the franchise starter that would finally put the "Justice League" movie wheels in motion.  Instead, a combination of the badly chosen producers (Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti), a passionless director (Martin Campbell), a silly screenplay (Berlanti and three other "credited" writers) and a miscast hero (Ryan Reynolds) led to one of the biggest superhero movie disappointments ever. Always cautious to a fault, WB put "Jl" in neutral and concentrated on "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Man of Steel" instead.  Now, the expected success of the latter should finally give a "Justice »
